Grierson Bridge Closed for Repairs

The City of Edmonton is renewing access to downtown with rehabilitation work on the Grierson Hill Bridge.

On Saturday, February 18, the City of Edmonton will begin rehabilitation work on the Grierson Hill Bridge (at the bottom of Grierson Hill Road).  As a result, the bridge will be totally closed at 6am on Saturday, February 18 and will remain closed until the new bridge is built and opened in fall 2012.

“The City is continuing its work on renewing road and bridge infrastructure to enhance the way we move through our city,” said Transportation General Manager Bob Boutilier.  “We’re continuing to respond to citizen priorities with significant investments that will improve quality of life in Edmonton.”

The Grierson Hill Bridge rehabilitation includes:

  • Bridge deck demolition and new bridge deck construction
  • Pier column repairs
  • Paving and new guardrail construction

Estimated budget for the rehabilitation is $4.5 million.

During the rehabilitation, drivers are advised to follow marked detour routes or use alternate routes such as Dawson Bridge, McDougall Hill, 105 Street, 106 Street, and James MacDonald Bridge.  Access to and from the Shaw Conference Centre from Grierson Hill Road will remain open. 

Due to the demolition of the Grierson Hill Bridge, McDougall Hill (north of the Low Level Bridge) will be entirely closed to traffic from 6am Saturday, February 18 until 6am Tuesday, February 21, 2012. After February 21, drivers can expect periodic lane closures during off-peak hours and rare total closures overnight on McDougall Hill. Drivers are advised to consider James MacDonald Bridge and Dawson Bridge as alternate routes when these closures occur.
